Developing Independent Writers in KS2 - with Ruth Baker-Leask
Fri 01 May 20261st May
9:15am to 3:15pm
at Little Sutton Primary School, Worcester Lane, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, B75 5NL
About this event
This one-day training session will explore how schools can develop confident, motivated and increasingly independent writers in Key Stage 2, drawing on key messages from the DfE Writing Framework. The day will consider how transcriptional fluency supports composition, while keeping a strong focus on creativity, motivation, purpose, audience and the teaching approaches that help children write with growing self-reliance, in particular oracy.
We will explore what sits behind successful independent writing in KS2, including the role of:
- rich texts,
- reading,
- talk,
- knowledge of text structures,
- sentence-level teaching
- and the writing process.
Throughout the day, the emphasis will be on translating national guidance into thoughtful classroom practice that helps children move beyond heavily scaffolded tasks towards writing with greater confidence, control and authenticity.
