Courses for 2026-2027

Supporting Early Language Development

Ensure the best start for all pupils in their language development.

This DfE funded research based CPD programme is aimed at EYFS and KS1 practitioners, such as the early years lead, English lead, and SENDCo.

As we are sure that you are aware, the development of early language is a crucial pillar of a child’s personal growth. However, according to research by Speech and Language UK, at least 1.7 million children in this country are behind with talking and understanding of words. Wider research and data confirm this picture. The percentage of pupils formally identified as having a primary special need in speech, language and communication is steadily rising - up to 22.5% in 2021, compared with 18.8% in 2015.

Delegates will attend 6 in-person sessions across the year, designed to equip teachers and leaders with a practical pedagogical understanding of both typical language development and also how to support pupils who are struggling with language acquisition.

  • To provide teachers and other education professionals with an evidence-based approach to teaching early reading and phonics effectively to pupils not making expected progress, including those with SEND.
  • To support schools to analyse the specific needs of children not making expected progress and explore practical ways to remove barriers to success and plan for appropriate interventions.
  • To explore generic adaptations to validated SSP programmes that will improve outcomes for pupils who need more support, including those who have SEND, whilst also maintaining fidelity to schools' chosen programmes.

Reading Fluency: The Bridge to Comprehension

Reading fluency plays a vital role in reading success. It is often described as the bridge between word reading and comprehension. Effective fluency instruction builds on pupils’ secure phonics foundations and supports them in becoming confident, competent readers who comprehend and enjoy what they read.

In this modular programme, delegates will attend 6 in-person sessions across the year to explore what reading fluency is - and what it isn’t - while learning how to apply evidence-informed strategies in reading lessons, within Key Stage 2 classrooms, to help all pupils become successful, volitional readers. This programme is designed to enhance and complement current reading practice and policy in school.

Schools should choose a Key Stage 2 reading fluency programme leader to attend the CPD. This could be a reading lead or an aspiring leader. The programme is designed for colleagues who are at the beginning of their work on reading fluency, or those who have begun this work but are keen to deepen their knowledge of the research and practices that underpin effective teaching of reading fluency at Key Stage 2.
