34 English Hubs have been designated by the DfE across the country. This is a new initiative aimed at achieving excellence in literacy and will focus on developing children’s language, phonics and reading skills and promoting a love of reading. Little Sutton Primary School in Sutton Coldfield, has been appointed as a local English Hub for the West Midlands.
As a Hub we will be working to provide support to 85 schools in the current academic year. Support this year will include:
- An opportunity to attend a Phonics Showcase to explore high quality provision in phonics and early reading. You may be eligible for supply cover funding.
- An opportunity to apply for funding to purchase resources to support the teaching of phonics and early reading. (£3,000, matched funding or £6,000, unmatched in some cases).
The first stage to access support and funding will be to attend one of the Phonics Showcases. These are all day events and since September 2018 we have held lots of very successful showcases that were attended by lots of schools.
The Headteacher along with the leader for literacy or phonics should attend the showcase. Some schools may be eligible for cover costs to be paid for attendance at the showcase. Please click here for more details. The day will include the DfE’s latest expectations and guidance for teaching phonics and a learning walk. In addition support will be provided by Literacy Specialists to complete a detailed action plan for your school. Following the Showcase more intensive support and funding will be available for eligible schools based on the action plans completed. Due to the level of interest for previous events demand for places is usually high. Please secure your place at a Showcase event via Eventbrite as soon as possible.
